Europa League results – 20th October 2011
Thursday night saw matchweek 3 of the UEFA Europa League 2011, a full 48 teams took part in last nights Europa League action in 24 exciting matches. In this report I will take a look at the various matches involving the 5 British clubs involved in the group stage of this years Europa League.
Our first Europa league result takes us over to look at Celtic’s game against French side Rennes, Celtic haven’t got a very good record against French sides in fact it was 1966 when Celtic last beat a French team. Then in the 33rd minute Celtic went behind to one of the most bizarre own goals in a long time, Cha Du-Ri totally got his signals wrong and steered the ball past his own keeper from a good 30 yards out. This goal actually set the tone for a enjoyable open game, which Celtic managed to get an equaliser after 70 minutes of play when Joe Ledley headed home. This result means that Celtic’s prospect in the rest of the Europa league tournament are kept alive.
Our next Europa League Match takes us over to Poland specifically Krakow, here Fulham were to take on Wisla the Polish champions. Things could have gone alot better for Fulham especially after 29 minutes when Dembele was sent of after 29 minutes, even with only 10 men Fulham fared well against Wisla then David Biton scored in the 60th minute with a goal that ended up winning the match for the home team. This result was not too damaging as Fulham remain in 2nd spot behind group leaders FC Twente.
We still have 3 more Europa League Results involving British teams so we better get on with it by looking at the Tottenham result. Tottenham were at home in this game against Ruben Kazar, Russian side Ruben Kazar edged Spurs on scoring opportunities but ended up losing out to a well taken Roman Pavlyuchenko free kick in the 33rd minute. With Spurs winning this game they take a 2 point lead at the top of the group, PAOK are the second placed team in this Europa League group.
Europa League – Remaining results
The remaining Europa League Results end up with our focus turning to the Midlands, first up we head over to the Britannia Stadium where Stoke City played hosts to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Stoke completely dominated the game with a 3-0 win. Kenwyne Jones opened the scoring after 12 minutes, then Cameron Jerome scored 2nd in the 24th minute before Ryan Shotton finished the scoring in the 32nd minute. Stoke claim top spot in their Europa League group ahead of Dynamo Kiev 2 point behind in second.
So the last of our Europa League scores saw Birmingham City FC play away against FC Brugge’s, it was the Belgian team who took the lead after 3 minutes making Birmingham think it might be a long night. However Chris Hughton’s outfit dug in and David Murphy drew level after 26 minutes, during the second half there was a bad clash of heads resulting in a lengthy medical delay. This delay meant that over 10 minutes of injury time had to be played, all the better for Birmingham because Chris Wood scored their winner in the 100th minute. Birmingham are now top in the Group H Europa league standings on equal point to Brugge.
