Top News Stories from the Weekend
Well what a sporting weekend we had this past weekend with what perhaps is the top news story was the thrilling climax to the Premier League Season. Survival Sunday as is was labeled by television broadcaster Sky didn’t fail to disappoint. In total there were 2 teams from a possible 5 who could have been relegated and throughout the day all of the teams tasted safety. It wasn’t until the final couple of minutes where the final 2 teams were relegated along with previously Relegated West Ham.
The final 2 teams relegated are Blackpool & Carling Cup Champions Birmingham City who were relegated courtesy of a Late Steven Hunt goal and further confounded by a Roman Pavlyuchenko screamer. Blackpool were relegated courtesy of a 4-2 loss at Old Trafford to League Champions Manchester United. The results left Birmingham facing the playing European football whilst playing in the Championship and ending Blackpool’s top flight dream a just 1 year. Leaving Blackburn, Wigan & Wolves the chance to fight another day in the worlds top league. Wolves were the closest out of the surviving teams to the drop after being 3 nil down at halftime they looked as good as gone but a battling second half performance kept them in the Premier League. This years final day was perhaps the most exciting last days for a while, despite the top spot having already been decided the battle to survive kept you on your seat until the final whistle.
The top News Headlines from across the pond came from the NBA & NHL playoffs. With Eastern Conference finals moving from Chicago to Miami the Heat wasted no time in making the home court advantage count by taking a 2-1 series lead over the Chicago Bulls with a 96 – 85 win behind a strong performance from one of their big 3. More Surprisingly it wasn’t Wade or Lebron but Chris Bosh who came up big with a 34 point and 5 rebound performance and helping his team to take the home court advantage for the rest of the finals.
On the Ice at the HP Pavillion in San Jose the Vancouver Canucks took a commanding 3-1 Series lead and take the lead back to Vancouver to secure a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals. Sami Salo scored 2 in a dominating 4-2 win. The Vancouver Canucks fans wont be resting on their laurels just yet however as in previous playoff series they have been known to blow a lead. The Canuck players and fans know too well how huge a Canadian team winning the Stanley Cup would be.
Over the past weekend this years Volvo World Matchplay came to its climax with an all English final pitting Luke Donald & Ian Poulter against each other. In a surprisingly sloppy affair when you consider the superb golf they both had played to get into the final. In the end it was Ian Poulter who came out on top with a 2 &1 victory. With the Win Ian pouter became the First player to win Both the World Matchplay & The WGC Matchplay. If Donald had won the tournament he would have taken the world number 1 from fellow Englishman Lee Westwood but Donald will now have to wait before he gets the next opportunity to claim the top spot.
In other Sporting News the England Cricket team has named its squad for the upcoming test with Sri Lanka with the main selection call being who would replace Paul Collingwood and that selection was given to Eoin Morgan who got into the squad ahead of Ravi Bopara. In the latest football news beaten Championship playoff Semi Finalists Cardiff City have released Jay Bothroyd after deciding not to offer him a contract. Does this lead to the permanent Cardiff stay for Craig Bellamy? Only time will tell.
