The champions league draw is not to be missed
With the Champions League final at Wembley fastly approaching and the 2 teams preparing for what is arguably the biggest game of the season. Manchester United and Barcelona will battle it out in what will either be a tightly contested final or a dominating performance by Barcalona. Many see that Manchester United had it easy with the Champions league draw as they played Shalke in the Semi Finals, but all could have been different if Inter Milan had been victorious.
For many teams as soon as the final is finished they will be looking towards the Champions league draw date for the Preliminary qualifying rounds as this tends to be in early June for the minnows of the competition. The main draw for the competition however is drawn in the day prior to the Super Cup final and this is where it gets serious. The Champions league draw rules can be a complicated process as initially in the group stages teams from the same country cannot be drawn together. The 32 teams in the draw are seeded into 4 groups of 8, the teams are seeded based upon their UEFA Co-efficient rating. The rating is based upon the teams performance in UEFA tournaments over previous seasons so the better the performance the higher the seed. For example the top seeds are normally the giants of the European game and the Lower seeds are teams who are making their name in Europe or their first qualification. Each group will feature a team from each seeded group and make up the 8 groups which make up the First stage. There are then subsequent draws for the round of 16, Quarter and Semi Finals.
As you can tell from the explanation above that watching the Champions League draw live can be a drawn out process and on average the event in total takes on average 2 hours to complete. The anticipation of the final however is enough to make millions of fans sit and watch the draw live even if it is an excruciating long wait.
The number of Champions league draw teams is initially 76 teams who qualify for entrance into the Champions league and though the qualification rounds is whittled down to 32 who enter the Champions league proper. The final group of teams is usually decided by the last week of August.
Once the Final has been decided on the 28th of May don’t get too disheartened of the lack of Champions league football as the race to qualify again will begin in just over a months time.
