Sports News Update – Football League News Roundup and Results
The Football League kicked off this weekend and it was great to have football back and we will begin our review of the weekends football action with our review of the NPower Championship action.
One of the biggest surprises of the day came at St Mary where recently promoted Southampton beat the much fancied Leeds United 3-1. Southampton were the better team and took the lead through Elvis Hammond after 10 minutes and Adam Lallana doubled their advantage after 25 minutes. Southampton made sure of the victory when David Connolly scored after 52 minutes, Leeds did manage to get a consolation goal when Max Gradel fired home a stoppage time penalty.
Other promoted teams also faired well on opening day with Peterborough winning 2-1 against Crystal Palace and a 98th minute strike from Brightons super sub Will Buckley secured a 2-1 win to open their new Amex Stadium with a win.
It wasn’t such good news for 2 of the teams who were relegation from the Premier League last season with Birmingham City who lost 2-1 away to Derby County. It was also a poor start to Sam Allardyce’s reign as West Ham manager as they lost 1 nil at Upton Park when a stoppage time Kenny Miller goal gave the bluebirds the win.
Their were also wins for Ipswich, Leicester & Blackpool who made the perfect start to their new season.
Moving onto NPower League 1 where Charlton & Notts County got their season off to a flyer with both teams winning their opening game 3 nil. Charlton beat newly promoted Bournemouth 3 nil partly in thanks to a wonder strike from Scott Wagstaff & Notts County won 3 nil away at Carlisle scoring all 3 goals in the first half. The newly promoted teams Rochdale & Chesterfield also lost with only Bury collecting a point with a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield.
Sheffield United who are the favourites to go straight back up got their campaign off to the right start with a 2 nil away win at Oldham. Leyton Orient will be left wandering why they let Adam Chambers leave the club after he scored a 30 yard screamer to give his new employers Walsall the 1 nil Opening Day victory.
Brentford, Colchester, Sheffield Wednesday & Tranmere started their season off the right way by picking up all 3 points.
NPower League 2 action now and a Injury time Louis Dodds equaliser was enough to deny Crawley Town victory in their first game in the football league at Vale Park. The 2-2 scoreline between Crawley Town & Port Vale will go down in history as the first result for the London club. AFC Wimbledon were denied their first points in the football league when they lost at home 2-3 to promotion favourites Bristol Rovers and it was another late goal which was costly. An 85th minute penalty was awarded when Brett Johnson handled a Rovers free kick which Adam Virgo slotted home.
Paolo Dicanio got his first win as a manager with Swindon when his side beat Crewe 3 – 0 at the County Ground and recently relegated Dagenham & Redbridge got back to winning ways with a 1 nil victory against Macclesfield.
There were also wins for Southend, Rotherham, Barnet, Gillingham & Aldershot.
Well that wraps up our look at the weekends football news so be sure to check back next week where it happens all over again. Isn’t it great to have football back?
