Sports News Stories – Football News Carling Cup Update
The London riots have not only affected the social fabric of the England but has also affected the sporting calendar. The most high profile event to have suffered was the International friendly between England and Netherlands at Wembley. The Police & FA decided that the fans safety couldn’t be guaranteed and that the game should no longer go ahead.
The move also mirrored the move of London clubs in action in the Carling Cup who cancelled their game again for the safety of the fans. The games in question were at Charlton, West Ham, Crystal Palace & Bristol City. The move has also put into question the weekends London based Premier league fixtures and in particular the Tottenham Everton game with White Hart Lane only yards a way from the weekends violence.
The one sporting event which appears to be going ahead is the 3rd test between England & India with officials and Police agreeing that the safety of the fans can be confirmed. With the cricket action taking place in the day and rioting in the evening will not tie up Police resources.
In more positive sports news & football news the Carling Cup 1st round took place and provided some high quality match ups and 5 Championship teams getting knocked out by League 2 opposition. Barnsley, Hull, Derby, Portsmouth & Ipswich all faced the embarrassing early exit from the competition. Some Championship teams fared much better with Middlesborough beating League 1 Walsall FC 3 nil courtesy of a Marvin Emnes Hatrick and Leeds beating Bradford 3-2 in a Yorkshire Derby. In the Nottingham derby it was the League 1 Notts County against Forest and the game was the pick of the night. After 90 minutes the game was tied at 2-2 and headed into extra time when Lee Hughes scored what looked to be the winner until Wes Morgans winner 3 minutes into stoppage time with a stunning strike from outside the box. The game was decided on penalties with Luke Chambers scoring the winning penalty after Neil Bishop had put his penalty over the bar bringing a cracking game to an end.
