Sports News Headlines – Wimbledon 2011, Football Transfer Rumours and NBA Draft
Wimbledon 2011 moved onto Day 3 and the star names featured Andy Roddick, Andy Murray & Rafa Nadal in the Mens Draw.
All 3 progressed with straight sets victories over their opponents last years champion Rafa Nadal opened up on centre court and crushed his opponent Ryan sweeting 6-3 6-2 6-4. Nadal swiped the american to one side with ease and when Sweeting stepped up his game Nadal moved into another gear.
Next up on centre Court was better news for American tennis fans when 8th seed Andy Roddick looked impressive when beating Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-4 6-3 6-4 and will be looking forward to his next round match up on Friday. Looking at British tennis hopes and Andy Murray gave his fans a much more comfortable watch by winning in straight sets against German Tobias Kamke 6-3 6-3 7-5. Murray has set up a third round clash with Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky or Croatian Ivan Ljubicic and the hopes of a British Wimbledon winner are still a possibility.
In the Womens draw Venus Williams battled to a victory against Kimiko Date-Krumm which may be the best game of the tournament in a gritty 2 hour 55 minute match winning 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 8-6. British tennis fans had a hit and miss day with Laura Robson claiming her first senior Grand Slam win but Heather Watson lost in 3 sets to Mathilde Johansson. Watson battled through an elbow injury but couldn’t quite muster the strength to win the tie. Laura Robson will now face Maria Sharapova in the second round.
Moving away from tennis and looking at the latest football rumours and with the arrival of their new boss Andre Villas-Boas the Chelsea transfer rumours have as expected been plentiful. His list of targets appear to be Porto Duo Falcao & Joao Moutinho and previous Chlesea target Neymar. He also appears to be interested in Inter Milans Samuel Eto which could signal the end to Drogba’s Chelsea career.
In Man Utd rumours in what many considered to be a done deal to sign David DeGea from Athletico Madrid seems to have hit a stumbling block. With the player appearing to favour staying in Spain but better news for Man Utd is that Ashley Young appears close to completing hi £17million move from Aston Villa.
That about wraps up the newsworthy transfer talk but be sure to check back tomorrow for more news on the latest transfer news.
Moving onto Basketball the rebuilding for next season starts tomorrow night with the NBA draft in Newark New Jersey. The Cleveland Cavs have 2 picks in the Top 5 which are number 1 & 4 after initial signs being that they may trade away the 4th pick it now appears that they will hold on to take 2 lottery picks. Many expect Duke player Kyrie Irving to be the 1st Overall Pick with Derrick Williams to be selected 2nd but these 2 players could easily change position come draft day. Be sure to check back on Friday to see how the draft went for your team.
