Sports news Headlines Update – Wimbledon 2011 and NBA Draft 2011

On Friday Wimbledon saw British Number 1 Andy Murray advance to the second week of Wimbledon 2011. Murray was back on centre court and playing with the roof closed with the rain & darkness setting in in SW19. Murray faced Ivan Ljubic in an tensely fought 4 set match with Murray winning 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-6 (7-4) in which the Croatians serve was worrying Murray throughout the Match. Murray now moves onto the 4th round on Monday where he will face Richard Gasquet in a repeat of the epic encounter back in 2008 where Murray came back from 2 sets down to win the match.

Due to the weather the top seed Rafael Nadal could only finish his first set with Gilles Muller with the Spaniard ahead 7-6 after winning the first set. Muller has beaten Nadal at Wimbledon back in 2005 and will be hoping he can do the same when the match resumes on Saturday.

In the Womens draw any hopes of a Bristish winner were dashed when 4th Seed Maria Sharapova knocked out 17 year old Laura Robson 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. It appeared that a big upset could have been on the cards when Robson was 4-1 up in the first set but Sharapova powered back and the win never looked in any doubt.

Moving onto to football and with the lack of any major action we will continue our look at the latest transfer rumours we shall start with an arsenal transfer rumour and Barcelona have had a £27million bid rejected for Spanish Midfielder Cesc Fabregas which is the first official move they have made for the player and no doubt the first of many.

Ashley Young’s transfer to Man Utd has been completed for an fee in the region of £17million and their spending is not stopping their with David Degea & Luka Modric on Fergusons transfer lsit.

Liverpool are going to be another busy team in this summers transfer window with them rumoured to be looking at signing Blackpool’s Charlie Adam & Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing appearing to be their 2 main targets.

Moving away from Transfer News and onto some American sports newsand last night the 2011 NBA Draft and the Cleveland Cavs rebuilding job begun after Lebron James departure last summer. The Cavs had 2 picks in the top 5 and with the Number 1 overall pick they took Duke point Guard Kyrie Irving and then with the 4th overall pick they took  Point Forward Tristan Thomas. The 2 picks do not replace Lebron and they perhaps wont have the calibre of James but the players will give Cleveland someone who they can love again.

In the other top 5 picks Derrick Williams was selected 2nd by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Utah Jazz selected Turkish Centre Enes Kanter and the Toronto Raptors with the 5th Pick selected Jonas Valanciunas.
