Sports News Headlines – Rory McIlroy Wins the US Open and more
Rory McIlroy created history last night when he won the 2011 US Open at Congressional at just 22 years of age he became the youngest Major winner since Tiger Woods in 1997 and the youngest US Open winner in 88 years. It was a record breaking week for McIlroy where is final score of 16 under par was the tournament record and was the best by 4 clear shots.
McIlroy was simply unstoppable all week and it never really looked in any doubt that he would win the tournament he won the tournament by 8 clear shots from the Australian Jason Day who secured his 2nd conseutive runner up finish after finishing second in the Masters earlier this year.
The win will put to rest his monumental meltdown when he held a four shot lead earlier this year and shot a round of 80, McIlroy now moves to 4th in the world following the victory and will now look ahead to the British Open in July where he can claim his 2nd major victory.
After England’s dominant performance on Sunday many English cricket fans were hoping for an England win and the 2-0 series win. However Kumar Sangakarra had other ideas and produced a defensive display on his way to 119. England could only manage two more wickets on the final day and that would prove to be there downfall. The hosts moved to 334-5 at tea which gave them a lead of 141 runs, but neither team would return as the rain began and both captains settled for the draw. England did have chances to take earlier wickets but Strauss dropped a catch at slip and Anderson missed a run out.
England will be happy to have won their 5th consecutive series but will feel that with better weather the win could have been more emphatic. Both teams will now concentrate on the upcoming one dayers starting with a T20 game at Bristol on Saturday.
Lets take a look at todays football news and before we look at the transfer talk some interesting news coming out about the potential new manager at Chelsea. Andre Villas-Boas the Current Porto manager is apparently on the verge of being appointed the new Chelsea boss despite many believing Guus Hiddink was on his way back to Stamford Bridge. Villas-Boas last season led Porto to a Portugese Cup double and also the Europa Cup and became the youngest manager at 33 to win a European cup. Villa-Boas has worked as a scout at Chelsea during Jose Mourinho spell at Chelsea, Porto & Inter Milan. Chelsea have announced their new boss will be announced this week and we shall see who is given the job.
Staying with football and now looking the transfer rumours that are making the headlines today and a hot topic appears to be Blackpool Midfielder Charlie Adam and where his future lies. Many believe that Man Utd and Liverpool are battling it out for his signature but no confirmed bids have been made and now Villa have entered the fray to try to secure the Scotsmans signature. In other Man Utd transfer rumours they look to have tied up the signing of Ashley Young and are apparently in talks to sign Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid. One final Transfer rumour to catch my eye is the possible transfer of Scott Parker to Arsenal a move which I feel would be great for both parties. We reported yesterday that Arsenal are possibly in the market for Joey Barton but i think a move for Scotty Parker would be a much better move for the Gunners.
