Sports Headlines – US Open Golf, Transfer Rumours and Test Cricket

Beginning the round up of Sundays stories on sporting event and we will look at the late night action from the 2011 US Open at Congressional.
Rory McIlroy is simply dominating the tournament and finishing round 3 on 14 under par which is the best ever 54 hole total of 199 at a US Open. McIlroy has broken many records at this years US Open to demonstrate just how good he has been at the competition. His closest rival is the Korean Y E Yang who sits 6 under par an amazing 8 shots back from McIlroy. The US Open is his to lose and only a record making melt down will give the title to some one else. The Irishman tees of at 8.20pm UK time tonight so prepare for a late one if you are looking to see who wins the tournament, so be sure to check back tomorrow for our review of the final round.
Looking at football transfer rumours now and Arsenal transfer rumours continue to fill the back pages with confirmation that Barcelona have opened talks with Arsenal for Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas is believed to be top of Pep Guardiola list of transfer targets but it reamins to be seen how much they will be willing to pay for the Spaniard a saga which will no doubt run throughout the summer.
In other transfer rumors  concerning the london club they appear to be in the race to sign Newcastle’s Joey Barton which appears to be a crazy move on paper. However Barton has played quality football for Newcastle last season and would provide some bite to a lacklustre Arsenal midfield.
In transfer news not concerning Arsenal Scott Dann appears to be a valued commodity as the Ex Walsall player is on the radar for Liverpool and Aston Villa but both teams do not agree with Birmingham on their valuation of the player.
The weather along with a sublime batting performance from Ian Bell has put England in a winning position going into the final day of the final test with Sri Lanka.
Ian Bell hit a score of 119 not out which moved helped England move to a score of 377-8 before they declared with a lead of 193 over the tourists. The century was Bell’s 14th for England and showing his poor form of 2 summers ago has been forgotten about as he is now a certainty for the series with India later this summer.
After the batsmen had put them in the lead it was up to the turn of the bowlers to get 10 wickets to try and wrap up a 2 nil series win. The bowlers laboured to the first wicket which was the wicket of Paranavitana by the bowling of Jimmy Anderson. After the wicket the Sri Lankan’s continued their solid defence and got to 86 before the man of the first Innings Chris Tremlett took the wicket of Thirimanne. The final wicket fell to Stuart Broad who took the wicket of Jayawardene just before the close of play to leave England chasing 7 wickets on the final day of the test.
