Shanghai Masters 2011 – Rory McIlroy leads the way

Shanghai MastersThe Shanghai Masters golf invitational has reached the end of its second round and US Open champion Rory McIlroy is the leader as he was at the end of the 1st round.

Rory McIlroy is currently 11 under par which gives him a 2 shot lead over his closest rival South Korea’s Noh Seung Yul who is  9 under par. Seung Yul is closely followed by American Anthony Kim and South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen who are on 8 under par.

Rory McIlroy shot a 3 under par 69 even though he had a tricky start to the start of the round. McIlroy started his second round of the Shanghai Masters by bogeying the 4th hole and double bogeying the par 4 9th.

He recovered his Shanghai Masters 2011 second round by making 4 birdies on the back 9. There are plenty of other big names at the Shanghai Masters as the field features 10 major winners in its 30 player field.

Some of the other star names at the Shanghai masters are former World number 1 Lee Westwood who is currently 5 under par a score he shares with the last European Ryder cup captain Colin Montgomerie.

 Shanghai Masters – Tournament History

The Shanghai Masters is one of the few golf tournaments which is not recognised by any of the major tours. Meaning that for the players they will not accrue any ranking points for their finish. However the players will not mind as their is a 1st place prize of $2million which is the richest 1st place prize in golf. An Interesting side note is that even the player who finishes last will win $25’000.

This is the first time the Shanghai Master has occurred and is run by the International Management Group and the full name of the competition is Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters.
