Premier League Saturday Preview – 20th August 2011
The Premier League moves into its second week but this will be its first full fixture list after the opening weekend had 1 postponement due to the London Riots with Spurs cancelling their game with Everton. Lets take a look at this weeks match ups which kick off on Saturday and make my Premier League Predictions for this second weekend.
Sunderland v Newcastle
Both Sunderland and Newcastle kicked off their campaigns with a draw with Sunderland drawing away against Liverpool and Newcastle at home against Arsenal. Both impressive draws for both teams as both of their opponents have aspirations to finish within the top 4 this season. Both Sunderland & Newcastle have made numerous additions to their teams and this game will be a great test to see what stage their new squads are at. The Tyne Wear Derby is one of the fiercest derby in the premier league and is always tightly contested and i expect to see much of the same on Saturday Morning.
Prediction – 1-1
Arsenal v Liverpool
Sky have picked a cracker of a game for its early afternoon kickoff on Saturday and after they both only managed a draw on the opening weekend both of these teams will be looking to get their first win of the season. For both teams this summer has been a summer of change Liverpool have added new faces Downing, Adam & Henderson whereas Arsenal have lost perhaps their most influential player in Cesc Fabregas. Liverpool have aspirations of a top 4 finish after missing out for the last 2 years and Arsenal will want to ensure that they stay there. This game is a great early season yardstick for either team and can show how much the changes have helped or hurt their club. This is a big game for both teams but i think the sale of Fabregas will have hurt the Gunners and Liverpool will be able to take advantage.
Prediction 1-2
Aston Villa v Blackburn
Villa kicked off their season with a draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage whilst their opponents were defeated at home by Wolves who they comfortably beat on the last day of las season. Villa have had a summer of change with a new manager and the sale of their 2 influential wingers Ashley Young & Stewart Downing and despite those changes think Villa will be alright this season as they have young talent who are hungry for Premier League Action. Blackburn on the other hand have no new signings and i think will be in for a tough season as their squad looks very lacklustre and will struggle to get anything from Villa Park.
Prediction 2-0
Everton v QPR
Everton kick off their season a week later after the postponement of their game with Tottenham after an uneventful summer at Goddison Park with no transfer activity their squad remains unchanged from last seasons campaign. On the opening weekend QPR were treated to a tough welcome to the Premier League when they were thumped 4 nil at home by Bolton. QPR’s start doesn’t get much easier as they face Everton who are an established Premier League team but are notoriously slow starters and should get a chance to open their Premier League account.
Prediction 1-1
Swansea v Wigan
Saturday will see the first premier league game in Wales take place when Wigan visit the Liberty stadium and will also be an emotional return for Wigan manager Roberto Martinez. Martinez managed the Swans between 07-09 and made 122 games for the club and is widely regarded as a hero. Swansea like QPR were beaten 4nil in their opening league game but i would expect a closer run game in this one.
Prediction 2-1
Chelsea v West Brom
West Brom’s start to the season doesn’t get much easier after facing the champions Man Utd last week they now face runners up Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea had a stuttering start after a goalless draw at the Britannia Stadium against Stoke and will be looking to get the first win for new boss Andre Vilas Boas. West Brom will look to eradicate the demons of a 6 nil defeat on opening day last season.
Prediction 3-1
