Ice Hockey Stanley Cup – NHL Playoff Finals Boston Bruins Champions
The Boston Bruins won the first road of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and with the win took game 7 and the Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins won the game with a shut out performance by goaltender Tim Thomas and an attacking presence which they had failed to display in Vancouver in previous games. Thomas shut out the Canucks for the 2nd time in the Stanley Cup playoffs and his fine performances were rewarded by being named the Conn Smythe trophy winner after saving 238 of the Cannucks 246 shots. This performance outshone his counterpart goal tender Roberto Luongo who played a Jekyl & Hyde performances which ultimately cost the Canucks the title.
Lets look at the game itself and the first goal for the Bruins came 14:37 into the game when Patrice Bergeron opened the scoring and silenced the Vancouver crowd and things got no better for them after the 1st goal went in. The Bruins scored 2 goals in the second period which effectively sealed the game for the Bruins. Bruins rookie Brad Marchland grabbed his first of the game after just over twelve minutes whilst Patrice Bergeron scored his second of the game after 17 and a half minutes to end the second quarter with the Bruins leading 3 nil.
The 4th quarter the Bruins simply played great defence and the Canucks couldn’t find a way past Tim Thomas. Late in the 3rd period the Bruins rubbed salt in the wounds of the Cannucks when Brad Marchland scored his second of the night and his 11th of the playoffs. Marchlands 11 goals is the second highest goals tally by a rookie since Dino Ciccarelli scored 14 for the North Stars in 1981.
The final Buzzer sounded and the Bruins rushed to goal tended Tim Thomas and they Mobbed showing that the players realised just how vital his performances have been in this Stanley Cup series. The win for the Bruins ended their 39 year wait for the title and the Canucks will have to wait atlas another year to win their first in franchise history. My turning point in this series was the hideous hit on Nathan Horton in Game 3 which i feel gave the bruins an extra spark in the series and the Canucks just couldn’t match Boston’s will to win the cup.
At the end of the night Bruins captain Zdeno Chara lofted the cup above his 6 foot 9 frame and a few missiles were thrown onto the ice but this was nothing in comparison to the shocking behaviour of the rioting Canucks fans. The Vancouver Riot saw fans take to the cities streets setting fire to cars, bonfires in the street and other public damage offences. The City of Vancouver will need to take a look at themselves and pick up the pieces of a damaging night on the ice but also a disastrous evening for their Cities reputation.
Lets not let the events however over shadow the great hockey which was evident throughout the series and Congratulations to the Boston Bruins for the win and enjoy your offseason as once the season starts you will be the team everyone wants to beat.
