HSBC Champions Golf Opening Day Report
The HSBC Champions golf tournament has been in existance since 2005 and has been played at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai China. The very first winner of the HSBC champions tournament was Englishman David Howell, he shot a 4 under par 68 on his final round to beat the tournamnet favorite Tiger Woods. Throughout the years the HSBC champions has attracted many of the worlds top golfers and has produced 5 different champions, including David Howell who we have already mentioned then YE Yang, Phil Mickleson, Sergio Garcia and Francesco Molinari last year. Phil Mickleson Won the tournament in 2007 and 2008 however will not be taking part in this years tournament due to choosing to stay home with family ahead of the upcoming Singapore Open and Presidents Cup. It is important to recognise that this tournament is now part of the World Golf Championship series of golf events, and the extended name of this championship is the WGC HSBC Champions.
Prior to todays opening round at the HSBC Champions tournament much focus has been placed upon the increasingly popular Rory McIlroy, much of this fever comes as a result of him winning the biggest tournament prize in last weeks Shanghai Masters golf tournament. As things turned out proving yet again what a interesting game golf is Rory ended up shooting a dissapointing 2 under par 70, this score was only saved by the fact he birdied the 17th and 18th. So who do we think will take the lead for this tournament, well as already demonstrated this HSBC Champions tournament does not seem to favour a particular country for its winners and at the end of round one we can see a leaderboard packed with top names.
HSBC Champions – Early Leaders
More specifically it is PGA Champion Keegan Bradley who leads the way at the end of the first days play, the inform American shot a brilliant 7 under par round of 65 shots. This round was typified by his faultless and agressive style of play, he avoided any bogey holes for the entire round and capped of his round with a brilliant eagle on the 18th. Following closely behind Bradley on the HSBC Champions leaderboard are 3 players who scored an opening round of 67 which is 5 under par, amongst these players tied for second is Bo Van Pelt who came into this tournament off his victory in the Asia Pacific Classic last weekend he is joined with two Swedish players Fredrik Jacobsen and Alex Noren. Many players then make up the following field including Justin Rose, David Toms and KJ Choi with other stars Lee Westwood and Adam Scott not far behind. The folowing pack would of included last years HSBC champions winner Francesco Molinari apart from a dissastourous double bogey on the 17th followed by a bogey on the 18th, this meant Molinari equaled Rory McIlroy with a 2 under 70 shots.
All in all I think you will agree the HSBC Champions 2011 golf tournament definately deserves your attention this weekend, So make sure you check back over the weekend for your HSBC Champions updates.
