The 2011 Golf World Cup begins in the early hours of Thursday morning when the 29th Omega Mission Hills World Cup tees off. This years Golf World Cup comes from Mission Hills Haikou in Hainan in China which was recently completed and opened to golfers earlier this year.

The format of the tournament sees 28 countries represented by 2 players in the stroke play formatted tournament with the first & third days played in the four ball style & the 2nd & final day in foursome play. Each country is only allowed 1 team to represent them and the players are selected from their Golf world ranking position.

The World Cup of Golf or Golf World Cup dependant on where in the world you are from began back in 1953 under the name of the Canada cup and was changed to the World Cup in 1967. The name changed to the World Cup of golf  in 1993 and it has also been a World Golf championship event from 00-06 before becoming the Omega Mission Hills world cup in 207

The most recent Golf World Cup winners were Italy where the Molinari brothers won the title in Shenzhen China and they are back to defend their title at the 2011 Omega Mission Hills golf world Cup.

Other Golf World Cup teams which are featuring in the 2011 Golf World Cup will be the Ireland team of Rory McIlroy & Graeme McDowell are expected to do well after their Ryder Cup heroics. The English team is made up of Ian Poulter & Justin Rose with the American team featuring Matt Kuchar & Gary Woodland.

The winners of the Golf World Cup will win a prize of $2.4 million dollars to share between them and the other 27 teams will split the rest of the $7.5 million prize fund.

In an interesting note there will be 3 pairs who are brother the Italian Molinari brother, the Villegas brothers of Columbia & the Santos brothers from Portugal.
