Golf News – British Open 2011 Royal Saint Georges Day Two report
So the second day of this years British Open is complete, all I can say is todays events revolve as much around those players who made the cut as much as the players who wont be joining us over the weekend.
Well for starters no one managed to match yesterdays low scores in a day where the course was blasted by glorious sunshine all day long. The club house leader at the end of today’s play was Darren Clarke, he stands at the top with a -4 score to show for his two days of work. But what with our heroes from yesterdays play, well sadly Tom Lewis was unable to maintain his form of the first day and posted a +4 score for the day, this means that thankfully he has made the cut to the weekend with a -1 score over the 2 days which leaves him tied for 14th position at present.
The other day one leader Thomas Bjorn also had a slightly worse 2nd round posting a +2 72 shot score for the day, this leaves Bjorn Tied in 3rd place at -2 over the 2 rounds. You may also hold some interest in the progress of the US Open champion Rory McIlroy who has fared much better on his 2nd day he managed to post a -1 69 in todays round which leaves him tied in 19th place at even par for the first 2 days.
Because of how todays events have unfolded we have 2 new leaders at the top of the leader board, these consist of the familiar face of Darren Clarke who is having a pleasing return to form and the American Lucas Glover. Both players stand at -4 for their first 2 rounds with Glover posting even par on todays round, where as Darren Clarke posted a -2 68 in todays round to gain a share of the lead.
As the day drew to a close it was becoming very clear that this was becoming one of the tightest major golf competitions in recent memory, today’s cut settled at +3 shots leaving just 7 shots between the cut and the top of the leader board. Due to this tight situation we have seen some of the top names in the game not make it through to the weekends play, some of the op players not making the cut are Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and even the current world number one Luke Donald who must be dissapointed after winning the Scottish open last weekend.
Just as a final note if you get to watch the highlights you will be in with a treat amongst the highlights is a stunning hole in one by Tom Watson on the Par 3 6th hole, his hole in helped to keep him level par for the day and +2 for the first 2 days.
So thanks for reading this article and I hope you find it informative, remember to check back tomorrow for the round up of the day 3 action right here at Real Sporting News.
