Golf News – British Open 2011 Royal Saint George’s Day Three Report

Day Two is over and done with and the cut was set at +3, the result of this cut has meant that many top names in golf including Luke Donald the world number 1 have not made it to day three. So with only 8 shots separating the top of the leader board to the bottom one thing was clear, we were in for a treat of golf for this weekend.

So many of you golf fans out there will have enjoyed last nights highlights from Royal St. Georges and will have seen the glorious weather conditions, when you tuned in this morning however you might of been forgiven for thinking you were watching a different tournament. The forcasters were right and the wind and rain out on the course today left many of the players stating that the conditions were as bad as you can expect in golf.

As today’s pairings made their way out onto the course the rain and wind was pretty bad, it was clear after seeing the first dozen or so pairings out on the course that today’s main aim was not to build up big leads, but more to hold onto the score you have and if you get some birdies along the way even better.

As a consequence when the final pairing of Darren Clarke and Lucas Glover entered the course they still topped the Leader Board at -4, as their games developed Glover scored a Bogey on the first but rallied to score solid Pars for the next 10 straight holes before slotting another Bogey on the 12th and again on the 17th. Glover finished the day 3 over par as he wasnt able to convert any birdie chances, this left him Tied in 5th place at -1 over the three rounds. Based upon how things were going for others out on the course many people would also expect Darren Clarke to be unable to emulate the form shown in his first 2 rounds. However Clarke fared better than most and managed to post a -1 for the day proving his consistency thus far, so after posting two rounds of 68 on the par 70 course so far Clarke maintained his hold at the top of the Leader Board at the end of Day Three.

As for the other notable performances the best scores posted today came from Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler who scored 2 under par scored of 68, this means that Johnson will accompany Darren Clarke in Sundays final pairing starting the day with a -4 score over 3 rounds, this means he holds 2nd place moving into day 4. As for Rickie Fowler his -2 score today ties him in 3rd place with the 1st days leader Thomas Bjorn who was +1 in todays round, so Bjorn and Fowler will be tomorrows last but one pairing.

I for one think Rickie Fowler has conducted himself exceptionally thus far, in America they demand success and with Rory McIlroy winning his first Major in the US open parallels have been drawn between the two. So although the Englishman in me will be rooting for Darren Clarke, it would be great to see Fowler go on and score another low score and make a run for 1st place, just to silence his over zealous critics in his homeland. McIlroy does look as though he will not be repeating his success this weekend as he is currently tied in 25th position after posting a 4 over par 74 in todays round meaning he is +4 after 3 rounds and 9 shots off the lead.

Tom Lewis the 20 year old Amateur who won the hopes of the nation after sharing the lead with Thomas Bjorn, still made a respectable score on day 3 considering the amount of Pro golfers who failed to get this far. Lewis posted a 6 over par 76 which left him tied in 33rd place +5 for the weekend, the worst score of the day from the 71 man strong field came from the Korean Jung-Gon Hwang who posted a 13 over par 83 for the day leaving him 15 over par after the 3 rounds.

Check back tomorrow for our final report from this years British Open where we will again look back over the days events. So from us at Real Sporting News thanks for your visit and we will see you tomorrow.
