Golf News – British Open 2011 Royal Saint Georges Day One Report
The 2011 British open began this morning as as the day developed into the afternoon session it is looking like we will have a treat as the drama unfolds over this weekend. As Day one wraps up and we reflect on the days events, we must also look forward to tomorrows play and who will make the cut and continue through on to the weekends play.
This mornings session began with the worlds eyes resting firmly on Rory McIlroy with everyone hoping he can continue with the form that bought him his first Major in the US Open. Well he didn’t get off to the best start by scoring a bogey on the first, we must remember this is a very different course compared to the Congressional in Washington which McIlroy dominated so well just a few weeks ago. At the worst point Rory was +2 after 3 holes and many may have written him off for this championship, with a dogged attitude he finished his round at +1 for the day and in an interview afterwards explained that he was happy with his days play.
Royal St. Georges is one of the best examples of a links golf course in the world and as such not only do you have to contend with the rolling fairways you have the weather, one poor bounce on the fairway can cause serious troubles. But not everyone was having a bad day so lets check out the players at the top of the leader board after the first days play.
Eight years ago in 2003 Thomas Bjorn blew a 3 shot lead with 4 holes to play leaving Ben Curtis to pick up the spoils on this very course, however today it seems this was a very distant memory with Bjorn displaying nothing short of an excellent performance. What makes Bjorn’s achievement even more poignant is he has had a slight loss in form recently due to the passing of his father, in a tearful tribute to his father he simply said his dad would of been very proud today. Even more impressive is the fact that Bjorn only stepped into the tournament after Vijay Singh withdrew on Monday, so good luck to Thomas Bjorn I very much hope his form continues to dispell the ghosts of 2003.
Were not quite finished yet there has been another pleasing surprise in today’s story, Tom Lewis a 20 year old English amateur golfer joins Bjorn at the top of the Leader board on -5 at the end of day one’s play. In a strange twist of destiny Tom Lewis achieved his fantastic score whilst sharing his playing partnership with his name sake Tom Watson, Lewis attributed his late string of birdies as just ‘being in the zone’ . It will be very interesting to see if Lewis can build on a previous success on the Royal Saint Georges course, as he has won the British Boys championship in 2009.
As always in these golf majors there is alot of golf still to be played out there so make sure you check back to keep up to date with all the latest stories on sporting events right here on Real Sporting News.
