Golf News – British Golf Open 2011 Preview
The biggest event in the British Golfing Calendar will begin on Thursday at the Royal St Georges Golf Club in Sandwich Kent. The British Open 2011 comes without Tiger Woods and British Legend Colin Montgomerie but times have changed and for British Golf fans times have not been much better.
Luke Donald & Lee Westwood sit at 1 & 2 in the World Rankings and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland sits 4th in the World and is coming off a recent dominant win at the US Open last month. Those 3 players are also the favourites to take home the famous Claret Jug and would no doubt be a favoured result amongst the home fans.
Course Information – Royal St Georges Golf Club, Sandwich
So lets take a look at the course the players will be playing on this weekend at Royal St Georges. The course is rich in British Open history and was the first course to host the event outside of Scotland in 1894 and has gone on to host 13 championships. Its most recent championship in 2003 was won by Ben Curtis who managed a 72 hole score of 1 under par which was one shot clear of Thomas Bjorn & Vijay Singh.
The Course itself is a Par 70, 7204 yard course for championships and also features the deepest bunker in Professional Golf on the 4th hole. The course is set on the Kent Coastline and is a typical British Open course with treacherous rough for wayward shots and a constant see breeze from the North Sea. If that wasn’t enough for the players to contend with many of the holes will feature blind or partially blind shots to add further difficulty which will no doubt provide an entertaining weekend of golf news.
So as with any preview of a sporting event a prediction should be made and my prediction is that we will see a first English winner of The Open Championship since Nick Faldo in 1993. Luke Donald will become the first player to complete the first British & Scottish Open, Donald has played sensational golf this year and his performance at the disjointed Scottish Open last week shows he has what it takes to win The Open. Don’t be surprised though if an unheard of name flirts with the leaderboard as Louis Oosthuizien did last year when he won last years British Open.
That concludes our preview of The Open and be sure to check back throughout the weekend for daily updates from the tournament at Real Sporting News.
