Fifa Poppy Ban – Latest News
Ahead of this weekends International Football & Remembrance Sunday the Welsh & English FA were hoping to print Poppy emblems on to their shirts. However their has been a FIFA Poppy Ban where they will not allow for either the Welsh or English shirt to feature a Poppy.
The FIFA poppy ban has enraged English football fans & former members of the armed forces saying that the action by FIFA is a “disrespectful”. FIFA have explained that the decision is to protect the neutrality of football.
In the FIFA rules it states that no shirt should carry any political, religious or commercial messages but a Poppy does not fit into any of these sections as it is a sign of respect.
The Sports Minister Hugh Robertson had written to FIFA asking for permission for England & Wales but this letter has fallen on deaf ears and the FIFA Poppy Ban was upheld.
It is yet another issue which has been raised from the FA to FIFA and the reaction from FIFA may be part of a backlash against the allegations of corruption from the FA earlier this year.
FIFA Poppy Ban – Allowed on training Kits
The England & Welsh squads will wear Poppies on their training kits as training items do not fall within the FIFA Poppy ban. The teams have also been allowed to hold a moment of silence before the kick offs on Saturday.
The FIFA poppy ban has seen fans and pundits alike question if the English & Welsh FA’s should defy the ruling and continue with Poppies on their shirt. With many believing a fine or even a cancellation of the match may be the consequences of having a Poppy on their shirt. It will also be interesting to see if England Manager Fabio Capello will wear a poppy on his jacket as surely this cant fall in with the FIFA Poppy Ban.
In recent years all the English Premier League teams have had a Poppy printed or stitched into the shirts for the games that are played over Remembrance Sunday. With the shirts then auctioned off to raise money for various armed forces or local charities.
Well that concludes our look at the latest FIFA Poppy ban news which is sure to rumble on before this weekends International Friendlies.
