English Premier League Results – Saturday 27th August 2011
Saturday was the 3rd week in the Barclays Premier League and featured 6 Premier League matches and the lunch time kick off was a Midlands derby between Villa & Wolves.
The first Midlands derby took place at Villa Park and turned out to be a disappointing affair with the game ending as a goalless draw. Wolves started the better of the 2 teams with Stephen Hunt forcing a smart save from Shay Given in the first half. Villa though were the better team for the majority of the game and in the second half and defender Richard Dunne had a header cleared of the line. The result allowed both teams to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and put Wolves on top of the league before the afternoon kick offs.
The pick of the afternoon EPL matches was the game taking place at Stamford Bridge where last years runners up Chelsea took on newly promoted Norwich. Chelsea took an early lead through Jose Bosingwa’s sublime curling 25 yard strike which set Chelsea on their way and Chelsea kept their lead up until the 63rd minute. A mix up between keeper Hilario & defender Ivanovic allowed Norwich captain Grant Holt to level the scores at 1-1.
A scary moment for the Chelsea faithful would happen just after the restart after Norwich’s equaliser when Didier Drogba was knocked unconscious after challenging for a cross with Norwich keeper John Ruddy. Drogba suffered a concussion in what was a scary moment for the Ivorian who’s health will be monitored to ensure he is safe to return.
After the Drogba injury Norwich looked the more likely to gather a winner but Steve Morrisons effort was stopped by Chelsea captain John Terry. The games turning point came when Ramires was brought down in the box by Norwich keeper John Ruddy who was sent off for his challenge and Frank Lampared scored the subsequent penalty. The scoring was not over as new Chelsea signing Juan Mata scored deep into injury time to finish the scoring at 3-1 and giving Chelsea all 3 points.
Liverpool continued their impressive start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 win over Bolton at Anfield behind goals from a couple of their summer signings. Jordan Henderson opened the scoring with a curling left foot strike which gave him his first goal in a Liverpool shirt, however despite Liverpools dominance they could not find a 2nd goal in the first half. They would extend their lead in the 2nd half when Martin Skrtel headed a charlie Adam corner into the back of the net in the 52nd minute. Only a minute later Charlie Adam would open his Liverpool account with a low strike from 18 yards out. Bolton grabbed a consolation goal in second half stoppage time when a Jamie Caragher mistake allowed Klasnic to score.
In the other 3 Premier League games Blackburn continued their awful start to the season when they lost at home to a last minute Mikel Arteta penalty after Blackburn had missed two penalties earlier in the match. Wigan got their first win of the season when they beat premier League new boys QPR 2-0 at the DW Stadium to continue their best start to a Premier League campaign. In the final game Swansea & Sunderland battled to a 0-0 draw where Swansea’s new goalie Michel Vorm was yet again Swansea’s star player by making a string of top quality saves.
In other sports news after the summer break in the F1 they were back into qualification for the Belgian Grand prix and Championship leader Sebastian Vettel would continue his dominance. Vettel qualified in pole position with a time of 1:48:298 which was 5 hundredths of second faster than Lewis Hamilton and a full second ahead of team mate Mark Webber.
In the latest news in the world of rugby England continued their warm up for this years World Cup by beaten Ireland 20-9 in Dublin. The win would avenge a loss in the Rugby Six nations earlier this year after they lost to Ireland which cost them the Grand Slam.
