English Premier League 2011 Round Up – Week 2 EPL Review
The English Premier Leagues second weekend was another cracker but for the performance of the week we had to wait until Monday evening when Man Utd took on Tottenham. The first half at Old Trafford went by without much of an incident Spurs tried to test Manchester United’s young Keeper DeGea but he was up for the challenge and performed well with crosses and long shots.
The second half however was a different and a team talk of the hair dryer variety from Sir Alex Ferguson kicked Man Utd’s star into gear. From the start of the second half Man Utd pressed and harassed Tottenham into mistakes. United’s breakthrough came in the 61st minute when two young England stars Tom Cleverley & Danny Welbeck combined for United’s first goal. United would not have to wait long before doubling their advantage when a wonderful flowing United move ended with Danny Welbeck back healing the ball into the path of Anderson who slotted the ball into the back of the net. The third and final United goal came when two of the older United stars combined Giggs clipped the ball in to the box and Rooney headed home.
United looked simply sensational and if their young stars can continue to play how they are playing they will be the one’s to beat if anyone wants to get their hands on the EPL trophy. Tottenham looked rusty despite their 5 nil win in the Europa League against Hearts and they may be unsettled with the ongoing Luka Modric situation.
Staying with Manchester and United’s rivals City who also made an impressive start to the 11/12 EPL Season and they took on Lancashire Rivals Bolton Wanderers who also made a good start on opening weekend. Man City were always in control in their 3-2 win over Bolton and showed their should defiantly be considered as Premier League title contenders. David Silva & Gareth Barry gave City a 2-0 lead before Klasnic made it 2-1 before half time, Edin Dzeko made it 2 goals in 2 games when he restored City’s 2 goal lead 2 minutes into the 2nd half. Veteran striker Kevin Davies made the game interesting when he scored to make the score 3-2 but they were unable to make any further damage to City’s defence.
This seasons surprise starters have been Wolves who maintained their 100% record with a 2 nil win over Fulham at the Molineux. Wolves scored their 2 goals on the stroke of half time striker Kevin Doyle score first on the 42nd minute & then Ryan Jarvis scored Wolves second goal 2 minutes into first half stoppage time. Man Utd, Man City & Wolves are the only 3 teams in the EPL who have still maintained a 100% record.
In other EPL matches Chelsea got their first win of the season when they defeated West Brom 2-1 at Stamford Bridge with Anelka & Malouda on the scoresheet. In the weekends biggest match Liverpool came out on top at the Emirates stadium when they beat Arsenal 2 nil leaving Arsenal with only 1 point from their opening 2 games and they face Man Utd on Super Sunday.
This weekend was a better weekend for the recently promoted EPL teams with all 3 teams getting points on the board with the most impressive result being QPR’s victory at Goodison Park. QPR managed a 1 nil win over Everton thanks to a first half Tommy Smith strike and will have now partly banished their opening day hammering at the hand of Bolton. Norwich were robbed of all 3 points when Kenwyn Jones 94th minute header gave stoke a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road. A penalty save by Swansea keeper Michel Vorm in the second half secured a goalless draw and Swansea’s first points of the season against a hapless Wigan side.
In the remaining EPL games Aston Villa remained undefeated after a 3-1 win over Blackburn at Villa Park with goals from Heskey, Agbonlahor & Bent. In a feisty Tyne Wear derby Newcastle came out on top thanks to a Ryan Taylor free kick. The game wasn’t without controversy as Phil Bardsley was sent off & Joey Barton should have had a goal after his head struck Seb Larssons arm.
