Dubai World Championship 2011 Day 1
Dubai World Championship -
Donald falters
The Dubai World Championship Golf tournament began on Thursday which is the climax of the European Tour season and the Race To Dubai. The 2011 Dubai World Championship takes place at the Earth Course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. The course is a par 72 7675 yard championship golf course.
The main talking point of the 2011 Dubai World Championship is the race between World number one Luke Donald and US Open Champion Rory McIlroy to win the Race to Dubai. It would be McIlroy who would take advantage on day one of the Dubai World Championship when he shot a 6 under par 66 after hitting 6 birdies on the back nine and currently sits in 3rd place.
The World number one luke donald has some ground to make up on McIlroy after he carded an even par 72 to sit in 26th place and 6 shots back of McIlroy & 8 shots of the lead.
If Donald is to go on to win the Race to Dubai 2011 he must finish in the top 9 at this weekend Dubai World Championship and he still has 3 rounds of golf to try to make it happen. If Donald’s form does improve over the week he could become the first player in history to top both the European & PGA tour money lists in the same season.
2011 Dubai World Championship – Hanson Leads
Peter Hanson of Sweden is currently sitting atop of the Dubai World Championship Leaderboard after carding a 8 under par round of 64 which equaled the course record held by Lee Westwood. Hanson holds a slender 1 shot lead over Scotlands Paul Lawrie who finished his day on 7 under par.
Other names amongst the Dubai World Championship field include Sergio Garcia who is 3 shots off the lead and looking for his 3rd successive European Tour victory. 2009 Dubai World Championship winner Lee Westwood is 1 over par for his round with Ian Poulter & Thomas Bjorn.
Well that wraps up our look at the Dubai World Championship Day 1 action besure to check back tomorrow for more from Dubai.
