Daily Sports news stories – Wimbledon Mens Final, England Cricket and Baseball

Sundays sporting highlights included the Men’s Wimbledon 2011 final which featured 2010 Wimbledon Champion Rafael Nadal & this years Austrailian Open Champion Novak Djokovich.

The final matched up the 2 top players in the Mens game with the both of them having already won a grand slam. Djokovic had already secured the number 1 spot in the world rankings by reaching the final to move Nadal down to number 2.

The first set was a tense affair with the game going with serve until Djokovich had the first chance at a breaking the serve of Nadal, a chance which he did not squander and took the first set 6-4.

In the second set Djokovich was unstoppable firing 13 winners and raced to a 6-1 set victory leaving him just 1 set short of his 1st Wimbledon title. However during the third set Nadal started his comeback and peered to a 6-1 set victory of his own.

So the match moved into the 4th set and after Nadal’s strong third set many were sensing a sublime comeback but it never materialised. Djokovich broke Nadals 1st service game in the 4th set he was broke back on his next service game but he would get the second break of the set to set up his victory 6-3.

Djokovich won his 1st Wimbledon title in 4 sets and also won his 50th match of the year with his only loss coming in the Semi Final at the French Open. The win wrapped up a great week for him with him claiming the world number 1 title and his 2nd Grand Slam of the year.

The final brought to end a great Wimbledon tournament where the weather in the second week was perfect and crowned to worthy winners.

Staying in London and moving onto the cricket news at Lords where the 3rd one day International between England & Sri Lanka was taking place. With the series tied at 1-1 both teams could take the initiative and the lead in the series.

England won the toss and elected to bat taking advantage of the glorious weather at the home of Cricket. However the decision to bat would prove to be a poor decision as England lost the early wickets of  Kieswetter & Trott cheaply with them making just 3 & 2 runs respectively. Kevin Pietersen held a partnership with captain Alastair Cook before Pietersen went for an ill advised sweep after getting up to 41 runs. It was Captain Cook who lead by example with a score of 119 runs with England finishing there innings on 246 for 7. The target would not be good enough as Sri Lanka would easily reach the target and take a 6 wicket win to take the lead in the series 2-1. Sri Lanka have to thank the superb batting performance of Dinesh Chandimal who finished with an unbeaten 105.

The series now moves on to Trent Bridge on Wednesday where Sri Lanka could claim the series win with a victory.
