Daily Sports News Stories – Wimbledon 2011 & Womens World Cup Football
Wimbledon’s traditional Sunday off continued as per usual and gave the players a well earned rest, but began back on Monday with some headline sports news. We will begin by looking at the mens side of the draw and British tennis hopes of Andy Murray.
Andy Murray was simply sensational in his straight sets victory over Frenchman Richard Gasquet, with on court temperatures hitting 40 degrees centigrade. In a tight 1st set Murray had to save a break point in his opening service match and overcoming it gave Murray an initial confidence spirt. Murray and Gasquet held serve and the British Number 1 took the tie break 7-3. From that point onwards Gasquet who has a tendency to play poor tennis when trailing did exactly that and Murray took advantage by winning the match with ease 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 6-2. Murray has now booked his place in the Quarter Finals for the 4th consecutive year and will face Unseeded Spaniard Felicano Lopez who came back from 2 sets down to beat Lukasz Kubot.
This years Surprise package Bernard Tomic who beat 5th seed Robin Soderling in round three continued his fantastic Wimbledon with a victory over the Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-1 7-5 6-4. Tomic is the first qualifier to reach the Quarter Finals since Vladimir Volchkov to reach the Quarter finals and is the 5th youngest quarter finalist. He will now face the tough task of facing Novak Djokovic in the quarter final.
At time of writing Rafael Nadal is 1 set up against Martin Del Potro & Roger Federer is one set all with Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny.
In the womens side of the draw 3 big names were eliminated from the tournament, the World Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki was eliminated by Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 1-6 7-6(7-5) 7-5. Meaning that Wozniacki will have to wayt until the US Open to win her first Grand Slam.
In a shocking turn of Events both Serena & Venus Williams were eliminated from the competition and neither of them will be competing in the Wimbledon final. Maria Sharapova however continued her march to the final with a straight sets victory over Peng of China 6-4 6-2.
In a break from Tennis we take a look at the action or lack of it at the Europena Grand Prix where Sebastian Vettel lead from start to finish and extenuating his lead at the top of the standings to 77 points with Silverstone the next venue. Vettels victory has lead to both Lewis Hamilton & Fernando Alonso to declare the title race over and making it a battle for 2nd place.
