Daily Sports news stories – Wimbledon 2011 & Cricket News
At the All England Club Wimbledon moved into Mens Semi Final day with 2 intriguing match ups with Tsonga vs Djokovich and Nadal against Murray and well begin looking at the second game on Centre court.
The game saw British Number 1 Andy Murray take on the world number 1 Rafael Nadal for a place in the final. Murray who had reached his second successive Wimbledon Semi Final was looking to become the first Briton since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the tournament and things couldn’t have started any better for the Scot.
With Centre Court buzzing Murray fed off their energy and won the first set after breaking Nadals serve at 5-6 to win the match 7-6. When Murray won the first set the loudest roar of Wimbledon 2011 came from the centre court crowd and Murray kept the Momentum into 2nd set. Murray had a chance at 2-1 but he couldn’t convert and this was the changing point in the match. Nadal would then go on to win the second set after Murray double faulted to give Nadal the break.
After the Nadal won the second set Murray was simply outclassed by the world number 1 with Spaniard hitting winners and making less error than the Scot and winning the match in 4 Sets 5-7 6-2 6-2 6-4.
Nadal will now look to win his 3rd Wimbledon title and he will face the sensational Novak Djokovic who battled through against Jo Wilfried Tsonga in 4 sets 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 6-7 (9-11) 6-3. Djokovic has lost only once in his last 50 matches which has earnt him the title of World number one no matter what the result is on Sunday.
Moving onto some Cricket News now and the second One Day International between England & Sri Lanka at Headingley. Alastair Cook’s second game as Captain was thwarted by a sublime batting performance from Mahela Jayawardene who hit 144 runs in 150 balls which helped set up the target of 310 runs for England to win. But England were not up to the task with only Eoin Morgan top scoring with 52 runs and England fell to 240 all out.
The series is now tied at 1-1 and the 3rd match will take place on Sunday at Lords giving the players a chance to get their names on the boards in the changing rooms at the famous ground.
