Daily Sports News Stories – Scottish Open Golf and British Formula One

Sundays sporting action featured the final round of the Weather shortened Scottish Open and the British F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.

We will begin our sporting round with some golf news format Castle Stuart Golf Course where the Scottish Open was taking place. Due to the appalling weather conditions on Friday and Saturday the tournament organiser made the correct decision of shortening the tournament from its traditional 72 format down to 54. Half of the field were due to complete their second round but World number 1 Luke Donald did not let that bother him. He completed his second round to be 3 under par which left him just 1 shot back on the leaders after his second round. On his final round he carded a 63 which left him at 19 under for the tournament and 4 shots clear of the Swede Fredrik Andersson He’d who carded a final round of 62 to finish the tournament 15 under par.

Luke Donald will move into Thursdays 140th British Open at Royal St Georges as World number 1 and will also look to become the first player to win the Scottish Open and the British Open in the same season.

One note of sadness to to come from the Scottish Open was the failure of Colin Montgomerie for the British Open, Montogomeries failure to qualify will mean that the Ryder Cup winning captain will miss out on the British Open for the first time since 1989.

Moving now onto todays F1 News and the British GP at Silverstone and the story of the race was riddled with mistakes which in the end cost Red Bull the top place on the Podium. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was the eventual winner of the race which had its typical thrills and spills which you always get from the Silverstone Circuit. Vettel looked to have the race won after taking over his team mate Webber at the start of the race but a Jack malfunction cost the German too much time and he would finish the race in 2nd just ahead of Mark Webber in 3rd.

As for the British boys Lewis Hamilton moved up from the grip from 10th to finish 4th and his race could have been better if his team would have fuelled his car up enough so he could drive aggressively for the final part of the race. Jenson button would also fall foul of a pitstop mishap when a wheel nut on his right front wheel was missing which forced an early end to his race. The third Brit is the race Paul Di Resta finished the race in 15th after his team had no fresh tyres for him when he came into the pits.

The race has not done much harm to Vettel’s championship hopes as he now sits 80 points clear of his nearest rival Mark Webber, many are already saying the race for both the Drivers and constructors championships is effectively over. The next F1 race will be from the Nurburgring in Germany on the 22-24 July.
