Daily Sports News Round Up – NHL Stanley Cup and French Open Tennis

Welcome to round up of the Sporting News making the headlines for sunday and after the drama of game 1 of the Stanley Cup NHL Playoffs well begin with the round up of Game Two.

As with Game one the second game was a tightly contested game at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver and the Canucks took the lead in the 1st Period courtesy of a Power Play goal from Alex Burrows but from then the 2nd Period belonged to the Boston Bruins. The Bruins took a 2-1 lead courtesy of Milan Lucic 4th playoff goal of the season and Power play goal from Mark Recchi. The Bruins kept the lead until Daniel Sedin scored the equalising goal with 9 minutes 37 seconds gone in the 3rd period. There was no more scoring in regulation and the game headed into overtime at 2-2. However we didn’t have long to wait for the overtime goal and with his second goal of the night Alex Burrows gave the Vancouver Canucks the 2-0 series lead. The goal came virtually straight from the opening face-off and the goal was timed after only 11 seconds had been played. The goal was the Second fastest goal in Stanley Cup Finals History. The Bruins head back to Boston with a 2 game deficit, only 4 teams have game back from that deficit to lift Lord Stanley’s cup with the most recent being Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh penguins in 2009. The Canucks are only 2 games away from being crowned champions and know that just 1 win in Boston will need them only needing 1 more win to lift the cup on Home Ice in Vancouver.

Moving onto the final of the 2nd Grand slam of the year and the final of the French Open where the two giants of the game of recent years Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal went Head to Head in the final of the French Open. Nadal manage to win his 6th French Open Champion in a 4 set encounter 7-5 7-6(3) 5-7 6-1. The game was so close to be a classic with both players looking as if they could win the competition. Nadal was cursing after winning the first 2 sets but Federer took control of the third set and look to have taken the momentum into the 4th set. However Nadal proved to be too strong and took the 4th set to give him his 6th win and show why he is mainly considered to be the best Clay Court player in history by matching Bjorn Borg and his record of 6 French Open victories. Both will not have too much time to prepare for the next grand slam of the year as Wimbledon 2011 is only a few short weeks away and no doubt both will be considered favourites to reach the final again.

Moving onto golf now and the Welsh Open which was taking place at Celtic Manor the site of Europe’s Ryder Cup win in 2010. The event was won by  Alexander Noren of Sweden who finished on 9 under for his 4 days work and finished 2 shots clear of his nearest rivals Gregory Bourdy & Anders Hansen. Defending champion Graeme McDowell finished off the pace at 3 over par but this was down to a shocking 3rd round which saw him carding a round of 81 and left him 11 shots off the lead. With the win Noren picks up a cheque for just over £300’000 and a spot at the 111 US Open which begins in 10 days time.

The England U21 football team signed of their preparations for the U21 European Championships with a win over Norway. The team won 2-0 with  goals in the first half from Daniel Sturridge & Danny Rose and will now look forward to their first game of the championships against Spain in Denmark Next Saturday.
