Daily Sports News Round Up – League 1 Play Off Final

With a packed calendar of sporting events on Sunday lets begin the round up with the final of the League one playoff at Old Trafford. Huddersfield and Peterborough battled it out for the right to play in the Championship next season. An Uneventful First half left the the two teams level at half time and it wasn’t until the last 15 minutes when the game came to life. The first goal came on the 78th minutes when a vicious free kick from Grant McCann was flicked in by Tommy Rowe. The Peterborough goal came despite a period of Huddersfield dominance and Peterborough’s second goal came only 2 minutes after their first which was Craig Mackail-Smith 35th goal of the season. The shot took a deflection but Peterborugh fans wont mind about that and the game was put beyond doubt when Grant McCann scored a gorgeous free kick on 85 minutes. When the final whistle blew a jubilant Peterborough team celebrated there 3 nil win and return to the Championship. The loss for Huddersfield will hurt Lee Clarks team and this defeat was their first league defeat in 28 matches.

Moving away from Football we move to the 1st test between England & Sri Lanka where yet again the rain delayed the start to the proceedings. The delayed start to the game didn’t seem to effect Jonathan Trott who made his way to his first double Century of the summer and was eventually bowled out for 203. England eventually finished the day on 491-5 but the chance of a finish on day 5 still looks a difficult prospect but England have the best chance as long as they can collect 10 wickets.

On to golf now and on Sunday the final day of the PGA Championship and this went very much to form with World Number 1 Lee Westwood & World Number 2 Luke Donald. Both Englishmen finished there 72 holes on 6 under par and a playoff hole was required to settle the championship. Both golfers went back up to the 18th tee and matched each other shot for shot until Westwood hot his 3rd shot into the water leaving the door open to Donald who duely answered by holing his put to take the title and the World Number 1 title.

Baseball now and the troubled LA Dodgers beat the Florida Marlins behind a grate pitching Performance from Clayton Kershaw who threw a complete game 10 strike out 2 hit performance to lead his ball club to the win. Following Jeter’s hit watch who managed 1 hit in a 7-1 win for the New York Yankees and is now just 20 hits from the 3000 hit plateau.
