Daily Sports News Round up – French Open Tennis and NHL Playoffs

french open tennisLets begin our round up of Wednesdays Sporting headlines by looking at the French Open and Andy Murray and British Tennis hopes. After dispatching Viktor Troicki in a 5 set thriller Andy Murray had to deal with the unseeded Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela. Andy Murray dealt with this task in a much simpler fashion winning in straight sets 7-6 (7-2) 7-5 6-2 to set up a semi Final with Rafa Nadal. Murray will enter the game as a big underdog to Rafael Nadal who is one of if not the best Clay court players ever. In the other semi final Roger Federer aims to stop Novak Djokovic 41 straight wins in 2011. The worlds top 4 tennis players all have a chance to win the French Open.

Now moving to Canada and the NHL for game one of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs where the Boston Bruins took on the Vancouver Canucks. The game was a tightly contested affair with the Canucks superstars the Daniel & Henrik Sedin left frustrated at not being able to break down the stubborn Bruins defence. However a goal came but after 59 & a half minutes of scoreless play, with 18 and a half seconds left Raffi Torres scored to give the Canucks a dramatic win. The win now gives them the advantage in the series and will give Canadian hockey fans hope of bringing the Stanley Cup to Canada.

Moving south into into America and following Derek Jeter’s quest for 3000 hits and he managed to get hit number 2984 leaving him 16 runs short of the milestone.  In other sporting news Basketball Legend Shaquille O’Neal announced his retirement  from the NBA. He leaves behind a legacy of 4 NBA Titles, 3 with the Lakers and 1 with the Heat. He leaves the league after suffering multiple injuries and not featuring in the Boston Celtics Playoff run.

Finally lets look at some Football News headlines and the Premier League summer managerial Merry Go Round has begun. With Gerard Houlier leaving Aston Villa by mutual consent leaves two jobs up for grabs. Mark Hughes is the apparent favourite for the Villa job and the Chelsea job is still available and Pep Guardiola is a name that refuses to go away despite him ruling himself out of the job.
