Daily Sports News Round Up – Another disappointing England Football Performance
Welcome back for another daily round up of the headline news in the world of sport and we will start at Wembley where England tookon Switzerland in a European Championship qualification game.
Many England fans were hoping for a big win by Fabio Capello’s men however on this occasion this game would not plan out that way. Switzerland very much took the game to England in the first half and there strong showing was rewarded by a goal in the 32nd minute with a goal from Tranquillo Barnetta when a free kick he drifted into the box dropped into the far side of the goal. The strike wasn’t meant to be a shot but poor defending from Rio Ferdinand & John Terry who didn’t try to meet the ball. Barnetta was not finished with his scoring and added a second goal just 3 minutes later again from a free kick and again a defensive mistake allowed the goal. James Milner who was in the 2 man wall broke away from the wall leaving a gap which Barnetta took advantage and drilled the ball into the near side of the goal catching goalie Joe Hart off guard. The Swiss fans and players looked to be on cloud 9 and England appeared to be shell shocked. England however did manage to pull a goal back from a Frank Lampard penalty after Jack Wilshere was bought down by Arsenal defend Johan Djourou. England went into Half time trailing by one goal and at Half time Capello decided to make a change and brought on Aston Villa Winger Ashley Young in replace of the first half goalscorer Frank Lampard. The substitution worked almost straight away when Young scored a great finish from just inside the 18 yard box. The score stayed at 2-2 till the full time whistle but both teams had chances to win the game. The best chance fell to Darren Bent who missed the target from 10 yards out to a virtually empty goal.
England looked a lacklustre bunch in the first half which can be blamed upon a long season for many of theplayers but they will have to make drastic improvements if they are to have any chances of lifting the trophy next Summer.
Staying with England national teams now we take a look at Cricket where they are taking on Sri Lanka in the second test. After a batting collapse from England early in day 1 Prior righted the ship on day 1 and on day 2 he was rewarded a century for his magnificent innings. This Century was Matt Priors 5th test century and going on to show why he deserves to be in the squad as he is great behind the stumps and is now showing brilliance with the bat. However the day did not belong totally with England as Sri Lanka Captain Tillakarane Dilshan put on a batting clinic ending the day on 127 not out and his team on 231-1 with the only wicket of the Sri Lankan inning being taken by Steven Finn. The test hangs on a knife edge with both teams in with a chance of winning the test. If England can take early wickets on Sunday the initiative will lye with them but allowing Dilshan to continue may prove costly for the English efforts.
Now a quick trip across the pond to look at the sporting news in American Sports and with no playoff action occurring until later tonight when game 2 of the NHL playoffs begins. The big game of Friday night was in Anaheim where the Angels took on the Yankees and the game was a tight affair with the Angels taking the 3-2 win behind pitching from Weaver. The other news story was Derek Jeters quest to join Cal Ripkin in the 3000 hit club. Jeter went 0-3 in the game and is still 16 hits short of the historic milestone.
