Daily Sports News – Return of Super sunday
Football is back and on Sunday so was Super Sunday, Sunday was the day when last years Champions Manchester United begun their Premier League title defence. United started there campaign at the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion and after seeing Arsenal & Liverpool draw on Saturday knew a win would give them a very early advantage in the Premier League title race.
Man Utd made a great start to the game when Rooney worked well with Fabio and new Summer Signing Ashley Young to slot home his first goal of the season. However the game would not go all United’s way as another of Alex Ferguson’s big summer signings was at the heart of the action. David de Gea who had a difficult game at last weekends Community Shield was at fault for the West Brom equaliser as he let a tame Shane Long strike go under his body. Shane Long who had signed for West Brom for a club record fee on Tuesday. The score would stay the same until the 81st minute when Ashley Young put a square ball in the 6 yard box which was put into his own net by Steven Reid.
Not the most impressive victory for the champions but 3 points is what counts and with the starting 11 having an average age of 24 shows that the future may again be bright for Manchester United.
Chelsea played before United kicked off at the Hawthorns and they also knew that a win would give them an early season advantage. However they were unable to break down Stoke at the Britannia stadium and would have to settle for a goalless draw. Chelsea will feel aggrieved as they believed that they should have been awarded a penalty but after second looks they would have been hard on Stoke.
In other football scores on Sunday in the NPower Championship Blackpool & Cardiff continued there good start to the season. Blackpool beat newly promoted Peterborough 2-1 at Bloomfield road & Cardiff beat Bristol City 3-1.
In Golf news and the final major of the year the PGA Championship 25 year old American Keegan Bradley won after beating fellow American Jason Dufner in a playoff. It was Bradley’s first major appearance and became only the third player to win a major on his first appearance.
