Wimbledon completed its line up for the second week and the last week on Saturday and the top 3 were all involved after Andy Murray secured his passage late on Friday night.

Rafael Nadal finished off his rain delayed match with Gilles Muller on Saturday and put to bed any chance of history repeating its self when he lost to Muller at Wimbledon in 2005. He won the game 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 6-0 to secure his place in the 4th round and a match up against Martin Del Potro. The match will be Nadal’s first test of Wimbledon 2011 and Nadal will have to be on his game as their last encounter at Grand Slam  Del Potro won at the US Open.

It was then the turn of Roger Federer to earn his position in the 2nd week and he was up against David Nalbadian and he had no major worries as he won the match 6-4 6-2 6-4. Federer secured his passage into the 2nd week at set up a clash with Mikhail Youzhny. As soon as the Federer match was completed Novak Djokovich stepped onto Centre court with a clash against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis with the winner facing Michael Llodra.

The game was a testing encounter for the number 2 seed but he battled through for a 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-4 in an unconvincing victory but he completed the line up for the mens draw in the second week.

In the Women’s draw Serena Williams continued her amazing comeback from a life threatening illness with a 6-3 6-2 win over Maria Kirilenko. The defending champion and 7th seed has got better in each game she plays and will face 9th seed Marion Bartoli for a place in last 8 on monday.

A bit of an upset and so far the highest seed eliminated Francesca Schiavone was eliminated by the unseeded Tamira Paszek in 3 sets 3-6 6-4 11-9. The top seed Wozniacki knocked out 27th seed Gajdosova 6-3 6-2.

Moving away from the tennis at SW19 2 summer football tournaments came to a end on Saturday. The U21 European Championships final took place on Saturday with Spain taking on Switzerland. Spains dominance of World football continued with a 2nil win in Denmark. A headed goal from Ander Herrera and a wonderful 40 yard free kick from Thiago Alcantara. Spain laid the same possession rich football as their senior counterparts and commanded the game from start to finish. Switzerland did have some chances with Headers from Pajtim Kasami & Timm Klose had headers narrowly miss the target and the future is certainly looking positive for the Spain and their dominance of the beautiful game may continue for a while yet.

On the other side of the Atlantic the final of the Concacaf Gold Cup was taking place between Mexico & USA at the Rose Bowl in California. The 93420 crowd saw a great game and a comeback win for the Mexicans. USA took the lead  when Micheal Bradley scored the first goal of the game in the first half with a headed finish. Later on in the first half Landon Donovan scored the Americans second goal and at that point they were flying. The scoring wasn’t done for the first half as the Mexicans pulled one goal back through Pablo Barrera to put the score at 2-1. Then 6 minutes later Mexico levelled the score when Andres Guardado scored after a Dos Santos cross wasn’t deal with by the American defence.

With the scores level at 2-2 at half time the game was up for grabs in the second half and it was Mexico who grabbed the initiative. Mexico took their first lead after 49 minutes when Pablo Barrera scored his second of the game when he fired in a short range shot past Tim Howard. The best was saved till last when Giovanni Dos Santos scored a sublime chip on 78 minutes to leave the final score of 4-2. With the win the Mexicans won their second consecutive Gold Cup and their 6th in their history.

Javier Hernandez was announced the competitions MVP with his 7 goals and wrapped up a great season for the young Man Utd player.
