Daily Sports News Headlines – US Open Golf 2011

Rory McIlroy is taking aim at his first career major win with a simply outstanding performance at the US Open at Congressional in Maryland.

McIlroy is currently sitting comfortably at the top of the leaderboard at 11 under par which has given him a six shot lead over his nearest competitor Y.E Yang , his lead matches the largest halfway lead in US Open history. Putting his performance is perspective only 14 players in the 156 man field finished under par just showing how well he has played over the opening 2 days of the competition.

The US Open is traditionally set up to be perhaps the hardest major of the year and this years course is no different with the course playing long 7574 yard course and a par of 71. The highlights of the course feature the 9th hole which is a long 636 yard par 5 and the 10th which is a 218 yard par 3 over water. The 18th hole is also a hazardous hole and is a long par 4 at 523 yards. Even the sensational McIlroy took a double bogey on his Second Round on Friday. The green keepers are also making the course doubly hard with high and treacherous rough just 6 inches of the edge of the fairway which is punishing the slightest of errors on your drive.

You don’t have to cast your mind back to far to find McIlroy in a strong position at a major. Earlier this year McIlroy was 4 shots clear on the final day of the Masters at Augusta and on this occasion McIlroy shot an 80 on the final day leaving him tied 15th for the tournament. McIlroy fans will be hoping he has learnt from his mistakes and keep his cool when the pressure is on.

Rounds 3 & 4 take place on Saturday & Sunday and another European major champion may be crowned champion come Sunday Evening.

Day 2 of the final test between England and Sri Lanka became yet another rain shortened day due to the rainy conditions with only 23.2 overs being bowled in Southampton. Chris Tremlett however took advantage of the situation and took his test best haul of 6-42 leaving the tourists 177-9 going into day 3.

The rain has played a part in this test series with it playing a factor in each test and without an amazing performance by England in the 1st test we may have been looking at a drawn series. It is now up to England to take an early wicket on Saturday and then to build a commanding lead on Day 3 & 4 and look for 10 wickets on the final day. However the weather forecast is showing that this game looks likely to be heading to yet another draw but a 1 nil series win for England.
