Daily Sports News Headlines – England U21s Euro Championship & Canadian F1 GP
Welcome to the Real Sporting News round up of Sunday Evenings sporting action and firstly we shall take a look at England’s Opening Game at the U21 European Championships in Denmark.
England took on Spain at the Herning Stadion and England were hopeful of repeat of their 2 nil win at the U21 World Cup 2 years ago. England started brightly in the first half and almost capitalised on a weak pass by David Degea but Danny Welbeck & Daniel Sturridge couldn’t take the opportunity.
After this Spain took of the game with a patient game which upset the Way England had wanted to play the game and it wasn’t long before Spain Opened the scoring. The goal came from a corner on 14 minutes when Javi Martinez was allowed a free header which was flicked in by Ander Herrera, the ball appeared to go in off the hand of Herrera but there were no complaints from the England team.
After the goal Spain had control of the game again and was having around 65 % of possession with the England team being wasteful when they were in possession of the ball. England managed to create their best chance of the game when Kyle Walker’s cross from the right flank picked out Sturridge who forced a diving stop from the Spanish keeper Degea. England would need to use the ball a lot better than they had done in the first half if they were to get anything out of the game.
England didn’t do much different in the second half and Spain continued to boss the game but other than a deflected shot early in the second had Spain did nothing with there dominance and this would come back to haunt the Spanish. With 88 minutes gone in the game Chris Smalling broke out of defence and played a ball out to Kyle Walker who cut inside and slotted the ball to Danny Welbeck who turned on the ball and scored from 12 yards out getting the vital equaliser for England.
Spain did not have enough time to respond and infect England looked the more likely to score in the last 5 minutes but the game would end 1-1.
The result will have to be seen as a much better result for the England team after never being in control of the game the best performance for the England team came from Kyle Walker who was at the heart of anything positive England did. The England team will now focus on their second game against the Ukraine on Wednesday where a win will make it likely that they will qualify for the Semi Finals.
Now lets look at the F1 Grand Prix in Montreal where after qualifying yet again championship leader Sebastian Vettel was sitting on pole position. However for a change Vettel wasn’t the main headline maker it was the Canadian weather which would make the headlines.
With a damp and soggy track the race was started under Safety Car conditions which would deny fans of seeing what would have been an exciting start. When the Safety car left the track Vettel controlled the pace of the race and was able to make a lead from 2nd place Fernando Alonso. The main action was happening a few places back and involved Mclarens Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton was initially involved in a collision with Red Bull’s Mark Webber which saw the Australian Webber take a spin. Hamiltons race though would soon come to an end when he collided with fellow team mate Jenson Button which caused a rear wheel puncture which forced his retirement from the race.
After the Mclaren incident the race ran without much further incident until the weather reared its head once again with a torrential downpour which caused officials to use the red flag which would go on to last for over 2 hours until the race restarted at 2050 BST.
After restart it didn’t take long for more drama to happen on the track and the Mclarens were at the centre of the action with the Ferrari of Alonso and Buttons Mclaren battling for position and Alonso was clipped and ended up in the wall which put an end to his race but also left Button with a puncture which forced him to make a pit stop.
In lap 57 Renaults Nick Heidfeld crashed out after a minor collision with Kobayashi which dislodged his front wing and leaving him crashing out off the race and brought along the 4th Safety car of the race.
After the Safety Car had left the track and left the field was bunched up left a grandstand finish the field started with Vettel leading the pack, Schumacher in 2nd Webber in 3rd and Button in 4th. This was when Button started his wining run by first overtaking Webber and then Schumacher and then set his sights on Vettel. He was just under 2 seconds behind Vettel with 5 laps to go and he was eating into the Germans lead and was constantly setting the fastest lap of the race lap after lap and going into the final lap was just under a second behind him.
The pressure he put on the German forced an unusual mistake from the German and Button overtook him and raced to the checkered flag. Vettel regained out of the spin to get 2nd and his Redbull team mate Mark Webber took 3rd with Schumacher narrowly missing out on his first podium place since his comeback.
Despite the loss Vettel still leads the championship by a big margin and will be tough to catch as this is only the 2nd race Vettel hasn’t won this season.
The race turned out to be a classic despite the rain trying to ruin everyones day but provided a great story on a porting event and will live long in the memory of the F1 fans.
That wraps up what was a dramatic Sunday evening of sport and hopefully will continue to the Heat vs the Mavs and be sure to check back for the analysis on the action tomorrow at Real Sporting News.
