Daily Sports Headlines – Wimbledon 2011 and Football Transfer Rumours

Wimbledon 2011 is now well under way and the Big 4 have all played their opening matches and have all managed to make their way into the 2nd Round.

On day 1 last years winner Rafa Nadal started his defence with a 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over the American Michael Russel. In the second game on Monday Andy Murray faced Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver surprisingly Gimeno-Traver won the first set but from Murray then took over after a faltering start to win the game 4-6 6-3 6-0 6-0 winning the last 15 games in a row.

On day two it was the turn of 6 time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer who eased through his opening game with a straight sets victory over Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 7-6 6-4 6-2. After Federer secured his place in the 2nd round it was up to Djokovic to win through and he did just that defeating France’s Jeremy Chardy 6-4 6-1 6-1. All 4 seeds looked comfortable throughout the 1st round even Murray didn’t look in danger of losing the match and will now be looking to secure their place in the 3rd round.

In the Womens side of the draw Serena Williams made an emotional return to Wimbledon after being away from the game due to serious illness. Serena managed a first round win and was clearly emotional as was demonstrated by her teary post match interview.

The Womens top 2 seeds Wozniacki & Zvonareva eased through into the second round and avoided any potential slip ups.

Moving onto our round up of the football transfer rumours now and the news that broke yesterday in regards to Porto Boss Andre Villas-Boas. Chelsea now appear to have met Porto’s valuation for the manager which is rumoured to have been over £13million and it now looks as if he will be the boss at Stamford Bridge.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have secured their first signing of the season with the capture of Jamie O’hara from Spurs for £5million. in other transfer talk Liverpool appear to be in the market for Bolton’s Tim Cahill who is on the radar for Arsenal and Spurs also. In Man Utd transfer rumours striker Dimitar Berbatov appears to be the subject of interest of Paris St Germain, which could be more likely with Man Utds rumoured interest in striker Alexis Sanchez.

Moving away from UK sport and heading across the pond and looking at the MLB action and the Philadelphia Phillies who hold the MLB’s best record lost a close game with the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. Jason Vargas pitched a 3 hit shutout to help his team win the game 2-0. The win gave Vargas his 5th win of the season and helped Seattle maintain pace with the Texas Rangers in the AL West.
