Championship Football Round up – Tuesday 16th August 2011
This Tuesdays Championship action saw 7 matches of fantastic action, these fixtures are the 3rd game of this season for most clubs. Although it is possibly a little early to predict who the champion will be, we can start to see some contenders. Amongst these early contenders are Southampton, who are proving a welcome addition to the championship after their promotion from League one last season. Southampton’s made a great start out of the blocks with Ricky Lambert chalking up 2 goals inside 11 minutes, then David Connoly put the Saint’s 3-0 with a third goal just before half time.
The second half saw Ipswich take the early initiative with a Keith Andrews finish in the 56th minute, Ipswich further capitalised on their early momentum with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scoring a 2nd five minutes later. Southampton however proved their quality when they held onto their lead, then in the closing minutes Lallana put the away teams victory beyond doubt with 2 cool finishes. This win maintained Saints 100% record thus far and secured them top spot in the Championship league table.
Next we turn our attention over to Elland Road where Leeds met Hull, Leeds dealt the first blow with a Ross McCormack goal in the 17th minute. What happened next will have put many Leeds Fans minds thinking ‘is tonight not our night’ after, Tom Lee’s found his own net with a awkward looking miss kick. Fortunately for Leeds Lee’s made amends for his error by hammering in a goal at the right end of the pitch just before half-time. In fairness the second half was pretty much all Leeds with Snodgrass and Nunez making the score sheet, this 4-1 win gives Leeds their first point of the season.
In our next round up we see Middlesbrough heading over to meet Barnsley at Oakwell, Middlesborough started this game unbeaten for the season which Manager Tony Mowbray was keen to keep up. As things turned out we saw another impressive performance from Borough, as they had to overcome an early set back when Stephen McManus found his own net after just four minutes. Soon after this Middlesborough made the perfect reply with Barry Robson and Scott McDonald slotting home and giving Middlesborough a 2-1 lead. Then the onfire Marvin Emnes scored his 6th goal of this season in all competitions, the game finished with Middlesborough claiming a 3-1 win.
Most people were shocked when West Ham dropped out of the Premier League last season, if they continue to maintain a level of performance shown on Tuesday they will become welcome additions to the league once again. West Ham met Watford at Vicarage road and swept the floor with them, James Tomkins notched up the first goal after 3 minutes which proved to be the only goal in the first half. West Ham continued to control the game in the 2nd half, then on the 57th minute Joey O’Brein put the hammers 2 up. Carlton Cole then stepped up for the 3rd. then Scott Parker in the 91st minute slotted home from 18 yards after a nice step over capping an emphatic 4-0 win.
In the remaining games goals were slightly harder to come by but the games proved just as entertaining.
Steve McClaren gained his first points of the season with a 1-0 win over Doncaster Rovers, Chris Gunter scored the solitary goal on 31 minutes in a very even game. Even though the pressure will raise slightly for McClaren this result puts Doncaster to the bottom of the table yet to score a point and with only one goal to their name.
Elsewhere we saw Portsmouth get off the mark with their first win of the season coming against Reading, the single goal in this contest was scored by Dave Kitson in the 51st minute against his former club.
In our final game from Tuesday night we saw Coventry City meet Crystal Palace at Selhurst park. Coventry Started this game pointless and looked to be heading to their first 3 points until the 89th minute, they had held the lead after they took the lead in the 48th Minute with a goal from Lukas Jutkiewicz. Palace however had other ideas and drew level with a Sean Scanell goal in the 90th minute. This was before in the 96th minute Jermaine Easter snatched all three points leaving Coventry wondering when their luck will change.
