Champions League results round up – Tuesday 27th September 2011
Tuesday saw the Champions League Game Week 2 begin with 2 British clubs in action and it was both the Manchester clubs who were looking for their first win of this seasons Champions League.
Manchester United started their Champions League campaign off with a 1-1 away draw with Benfica and with the arrival of Basel at Old Trafford many were predicting an Easy win for the English Premier League Leaders. Man Utd gave themselves an early 2nil lead thanks to a quickfire double from striker Danny Welbeck. However the lead flatter Man Utd as FC Basel had plenty of chances to score a goal of their own.
FC Basel breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Fabien Frei got the Swiss side back in the tie, then 2 minutes later Alexander Frei got the equaliser. The game was then turned completely on its head when Basel were awarded a penalty which Frei converted to give Basel the unlikely lead. The lead would last up until the 90th minute when Ashley Young levelled the tie at 3-3 which is how the match ended at the Final Whistle.
The result leaves Man Utd sitting 3rd in their Champions League Group after 2 matches where they have 2 points and are awaiting their first Champions League victory of the season.
Man City are also awaiting their first Champions League win after an unsuccessful game where they lost 2 nil against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. A double from Mario Gomez before half time gave Bayern the win and leaving Man City awaiting their first ever Champions League win.
The game was overshadowed however by the Carlos Tevez show who apparently refused to go on as a substitute, leaving Mancini saying that he no longer wants Tevez at the club. Tevez has now said it was a misunderstanding and he did not refuse to go onto the pitch, but saying he felt unwell and would be no help to his team mates on the pitch.
