Carling Cup Round 2 – Tuesday 23rd August 2011
Tuesday’s Sports news comes from Round 2 of the Carling Cup and this is the stage when the Barclays Premier League teams who aren’t in European competitions joined into the competition.
The League Cup is known for lower league opposition causing upsets and the Carling Cup Round 2 was no exception with some Premier League teams falling at the first hurdle. The second round would not be a good night for any of the 3 newly promoted Premier League teams who all went crashing out at the first opportunity. Swansea lost to League 2 Shrewsbury 3-1 at the Greenhous Meadow after coming back from a goal behind. The victory for Shrewsbury meant that they qualified for the 3rd round of the Carling Cup for the first time in 18 years. After a great win against Everton at the weekend QPR were brought crashing down to Earth when they lost 2 nil at home against League One Rochdale. The most emphatic loss was a 4 nil home loss for Norwich at the hands of League One MK Dons, who won the game courtesy of goals from Luke Chadwick, Sam Baldock & Daniel Powell. The 3 new EPL teams will probably not mind too much about getting knocked out at the first stage as their focus will be avoiding relegation.
A fourth Premier League team would also suffer a giant killing when Sunderland were defeated 1 nil in Extra time away at Brighton. Championship side Brighton have started their league season positively and the victory will boost their early season confidence.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Premier League sides in action on Tuesday as Aston Villa waited till the 80th minute to open the scoring against league 2 Hereford. Eric Lichaj opened the scoring when Hereford failed to clear a Marc Albrighton corner and then and Nathan Delfouneso made sure of the win with a 88th minute stike to finish the game off a 2-0. Wolves continued their solid start to the season with a thumping 4 nil win against Northampton and Black Country rivals West Brom defeated Bournemouth 4-1 at Dean Court.
Nottingham Forest, Leicester, Milwall, Leeds,Crystal Palace, Charlton, Cardiff, Bristol Rovers & Burnley all secured their place in the next round of the competition.
In other football news 5 teams secured their places in this seasons Champions League, Bayern Munich won their tie 3 nil on aggregate by beating FC Zurich both Home & Away. Apoel Nicosia overturned a 1 nil away defeated to beat Wisla Krakow 3-1 at home to secure a 3-2 Aggregate win. There was only one tie which was decided by the lottery of penalties, and after being tied 3-3 on aggregate Genk beat Maccabi Haifa 4-1 on penalties. Dinamo Zagreb & Villareal also got their names into Thursday’s Champions League draw.
