Carling Cup & Europa League Results 30/11/11
Carling Cup Quarter Final – Man United Shocked at Home
Last night saw one of the biggest shocks of this seasons Carling Cup results with Crystal Palace defeating Man Utd at Old Trafford.
Man Utd cme into the Carling Cup quarter final as odds on favourites to make it into the Carling Cup semi finals but Crystal Palace had other ideas. The first hallf of the match produced no goals and went by without much incident but the game came alive in the second half of the tie.
Darren Ambrose who was a second half substitute got the games first goal when he rifled a 35 yard strike past Man Utd keeper Ben Amos into the top corner. The goal put the Old Trafford faithful into a stunned silence
However the United fans didn’t have to wait long for a reply after Federico Macheda was fouled in the box and he then stepped up to slot away the penalty. The game would stay at the same scoreline until the 90 minutes were up and extra time would be needed to decide the winner. The winner would come in the 8th minute of extra time when Glenn Murray nodded home a Ambrose free kick into the back of the net.
Man Utd desperately tried to get an equaliser but Valencia & Macheda spurned chances and great defending from Palace saw them into the Carling Cup last 4 for the 1st time in 10 years.
